Matters of the Heart: Faith and Health in Practice
|
| Philosophers of old understood the heart to be the center of personhood; the location of the inner self where the meeting with the Divine takes place; the willing center of commitment to others, the world, and God. With increasing amounts of stress, anxiety, and depression affecting millions of Americans today, our risk of living with diseased hearts –physically, emotionally, and spiritually – intensifies. In this workshop, (1) participants first will learn of recent research that evaluates psychological, social and spiritual interventions to prevent or treat coronary heart disease. Next, (2) we will demonstrate and practice methods for improving access to our heart’s intelligence in the management of stress, gaining new insights, enhancing relationships, and accessing spiritual wisdom. (3) We will learn what the Jewish and Christian Sacred Texts (Bible) have to say about the heart and heart-knowledge. Finally, (4) we will explore how these physical, emotional, and spiritual sources of wisdom may affect pastoral counselors’ treatment strategies and enhance therapeutic outcomes for their clients; or (5) how these sources of wisdom can empower us to live more holy and healthy lives. |
